How do you get hundreds of friends on Myspace and Facebook?

I mean I know people who aren't super outgoing with 100 friends.. and then more popular people with 500 to 1000 or so.. I'm just baffled at how people know so many other people, or are we talking about adding every vague acquaintance? This is just curiousity/envy , not so much a personal attack. thanks.

Those people add everyone as a friend....bands, porn stars, actors/actresses, anyone that requests them as a friend.
