Because the US Federal Reserve has kept pursuing a very lenient monetary policy, and Americans have a historically low savings rate, while the Pound is dependent on the Euro. The result is that the US have been addicted to ever growing commercial and current account deficits and have accumulated a public debt of cataclysmic proportions, mostly in the hands of Japan and China. Now that China has taken the first step towards internationalizing its currency, the Yuan is aiming at replacing the US Dollar first as a regional, then as a global currency.

If you are asking why 1 pound is > 1 dollar, the answer is because the two currencies have entirely different origins and have never been equal. The Pound was originally defined as one troy pound of silver. Hundreds of years later the dollar was created on another continent and was defined as a certain number of grains of gold. The pound was once worth many times the dollar, but over time as things have evolved the pound has fallen with respect to the dollar.
