I am about to purchase a laptop and was looking at HP. I had a Dell and their customer service sucks. One time, there was an issue with my computer and the representative, who was from India, ran me in circles, and told me he did not know what was wrong. Luckily, through trial and error, I was able to correct the problem MYSELF. Is HP like this, or do they have better support?

Another instance occurred with Dell occurred when my hard drive shut down. The representative tried to get me to buy a new one instead of replacing it. And he had me on hold for two hours, why I don't know.

I have used HP's tech support on many occasions. They are very nice and helpful. I have also called Dell's tech support for my office computer - OMG what a horrible experience that was. I personally prefer HP's products over Dell's. I have had great performance from my HP computer, scanner, camers, printer, etc.

Yes, they do. I've had an HP product for about 6 years now, and never had any problems with their tech support. They were always quick to respond and very helpful. I will definitely continue to buy their products.

I think you'll find situations like you described with any (all) of the major companies that out source their support. The people they out source too are generally underpaid and under-trained and are required to walk through a script step by step.

I've worked in computer support area for a few years now and I find HP's "average user" support to be good, much better than dell. However, to dell's credit, their business support side is pretty good.

First of all, the manufacturer's support should be really just for hardware problems or sometimes drivers. If you corrected the problem with your Dell yourself, I'm suspecting you had some config issue on your OS, right? Well, that ain't Dell's fault. I'll bet they told you to reinstall yopur OS, didn't they? Be fair. Most "PC problems" are really user config problems with nothing at all wrong with the PC.

That said, HP is probably the best PC support right now, Lenovo second and Dell a distant third.

Try to purchase from a reseller in your area that also provides technical support for the product. Best Buy and Circuit City both do this. If you have problems with the product you can simply take it to one of those stores for service. Also purchase a 3 year extended warranty if possible. Aside form that HP does have pretty good customer service.

Hp has the worst support ever. they just leave you on hold and if you wait for the 45min they tell you your computer is fine if you know what your doing get a hp if you don't well your screwed try gateway but there computers are junk. I prefer Hp it is all I will buy then again I would rather have something that has no customer service that doesn't need it. Although Compaq is hp now that is almost the worst computer you could buy its a tie between Compaq and gateway for most expensive trash. Pick your poison my friend.
