Saddest poem I've read. Don't read if you are already depressed. here it is:

I went to a party, Mom, I remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink, Mom, so I drank soda instead
I really felt proud inside, Mom, the way you said I would.
I didn't drink and drive, Mom, even though the others said I should.
I know I did the right thing, Mom, I know you are always right.
Now the party is finally ending
Mom, as everyone is driving out of sight.

As I got into my car, Mom, I knew I'd get home in one piece.
Because of the way you raised me, so responsible and sweet.
I started to drive away, Mom, but as I pulled out into the road,
the other car didn't see me, Mom, and hit me like a load.
As I lay there on the pavement, Mom, I hear the policeman say,
the other guy is drunk, Mom, and now I'm the one who will pay.

I'm lying here dying, Mom.. I wish you'd get here soon.
How could this happen to me, Mom? My life just burst like a balloon.
There is blood all around me, Mom, and most of it is mine.
I hear the medic say, Mom, I'll die in a short time.
I just wanted to tell you, Mom, I swear I didn't drink.
It was the others, Mom. The others didn't think.
He was probably at the same party as I.
The only difference is, he drank and I will die.

Why do people drink, Mom? It can ruin your whole life.
I'm feeling sharp pains now. Pains just like a knife.
The guy who hit me is walking, Mom, and I don't think it's fair.
I'm lying here dying and all he can do is stare.

Tell my brother not to cry, Mom. Tell Daddy to be brave.
And when I go to heaven, Mom, put "Daddy's Girl" on my grave.
Someone should have told him, Mom, not to drink and drive.
If only they had told him, Mom, I would still be alive.
My breath is getting shorter, Mom. I'm becoming very scared.
Please don't cry for me, Mom. When I needed you, you were always there.
I have one last question, Mom, before I say good bye.
I didn't drink and drive, so why am I the one to die?

Well, I am in tears now. Ignore the girl that said it was gay. She is young and doesn't get it yet.

As for poetics, it was crap. For the messege or the moral of the story, hmm, mommy should have probably told the little girl that being sober and driving away from a party of drunk drivers is really stupid too! Do you think I'd drive home from a bar at 2 am on New Years? Oh hell no even if I was sober! Usually, the drunk driver gets to live. It has to do with the alcohol relaxing the body enough. Yes, alcohol does save people's lives in those sorts of accidents. Perhaps the little girl should have drank or had the party at her own house. Of course, I'm just kidding. Mommy shouldn't have let her daughter go to a drinking party with a bunch of people who will drive home drunk. It sounds like she was underage being so interested in Mommy and all.

I think it is a very sad poem. Has a very good message though as well. You just never know when death is near. I am just glad I did not learn how to drive until I was 29 and I never drove drunk and now I am 37. When I was younger I might have tried. People just do not think of driving under the influence and how they can really hurt or kill an innocent person.

Yes it is, where I live we just a had all but one of a family of 5 die on thier way home from a soccer tournament beacuse they were hit by a drunk driver. Our country needs to focus less of stupid issues like school dress codes and more on getting drunks off the streets.

I emailed that poem to our safety director many months ago.

I really like that poem.

That is a great reality check for those ignorant people that always say, "it will never happen to me".

That choice is taken away from us by other drivers being on the road. Just today we had 4 people die in one car about 2 miles from me. Pretty sad.

Great peom.

It's like one of those sappy health class videos where they show people split in half lying on the roadway, injured in some car wreck involving alcohol. And yet, we shrug it off, and go drive drunk anyway.

I have this poem on my fridge, It is the most heart wrenching thing i have read and the sad part is , that to many people have died from people who get behind the wheel drunk. My heart goes out to everyone who has lost a loved one to such a sensless tragedy.

I wrote one my self some time back when I was in school that is called..."Please God I'm Only 17". It is pretty close to this one. The only difference is mine didn't have any thing to do with drinking, just driving to fast.

Yes, but I am eight weeks pregnant so it is ten times sadder :). I've heard that one before. I like the poem though.
