I've also made sure she is logged in as the Administrator (the profile she uses)

Excuse me, not system restore, but the computer backup program. She hasn't made any restore points. I found her documents. The path on the shortcut was pointing to a fake folder, but that doesn't explain the missing desktop files...

I used Windows 2000 Server for years, because it was the most secure platform that required far fewer patches then all of the other Microsoft platforms. Windows 2000 Server was built in Australia, for Microsoft, that is why the platform was secure and not the junk platforms that Microsoft is known for.

What you have described I doubt very serious if your mother did anything wrong or the system itself. The 2000 Server is just to secure.

Make sure your mother logged in with the correct password as she should be the administrator.

Open my computer, open drive "C", open properties, open tools and where you see check files/folders for errors, place a check mark. You will get a pop up saying "system need to be free for a system check to to performed. Check yes, and then reboot your system. On startup your system will perform a complete scan of all your files/folders and correct any problems automatic.

After this procedure, your pc will reboot and load all your programs.

This has always worked for me in the pass, an all my programs were reloaded without ever having to reformat.

I don't use Windows 2000 anymore as Microsoft does not support any platforms prior to Windows XP Pro., or Home. I use XP Pro., now an it is pure garbage compared to Windows 2000 Server.

Good luck,

It sounds far more likely she simply logged in as a different user. That would appear, an boot, that everything had been erased and you were starting from scratch.

You said you looked into a restore? You would not know if they did a system restore from a restore partition. A system restore is possible (but with Windows 2000!?), but it isn't likely anybody could do that by accident without knowing.

I don't know if I had the same thing happen. You can judge for yourself. One morning my 3 browsers shut down. I only had Microsoft Word. I went all around and about for a week, when I should have called the manufacturer of the main browser, Microsoft. They're the people who have responsibility for the main browser, which is the one I was interested in. As to the other 2, one came back later in the day, and the 3rd one was uninstalled and reinstalled, but it's totally corrupt anyway, because it crashed 2X in a week, and the advisory was to upgrade it. I'm still working on getting the main browser back, but I will soon.

I have a tenet except restoring that must be slightly less demanding when you're semi-sensible with pcs(which it type of feels you're.) On XP hit commence then accurate click "My pc" then click deal with. on the show that pops up hit gadget manager and word if there are any ! in a yellow triangle. in the journey that your show has that triangle then meaning you could favor to reinstall your video driving force. So click on the ! it truly is for your show and accurate click the driving force and click houses. on the show that pops up click on "driving force" then click on "replace driving force." click on search for immediately for as a lot as date driving force application. Then that is going to preserve itself.
