The temp gage goes up about a third of the gage. Thermostat seems to be opening up. The top heater core hose is warm the bottom heater core hose is very hot. I disconnected the top heater core hose. I connected a water hose to it. Water poured out the other end. Core seems to be open. I checked the vent door cable and it was in place. The air comming out is only warm for a minute or so then it cools down. If you wait a few minutes when you turn if back on it is warm again for a minute or less. Any ideas??

Check the valve that controls coolant flow to your heater. Sounds like it's not opening. It's located undre the hood close to the heater on one of the heater hoses. It is usually vacuum operated.

be careful with temp problems and the neon they have aluminum heads and will warp if you get them to hot also these cars eat head gaskets often... especially on the 2.0 4 cylinder if its not leaking its probably a head gasket
