the university of north carolina at chapel hill has really awesome topics this year...
such as:
what are you curious about?
If you could design a class what would it be...etc
If you have to choose a specific college essay i would choose the 1st beacuse it is so open ended and the whole point of the essay is to let them find out more about you, and what better way to do that than to tell them directly?
Personally,as i want to major in international studies, im writing my essay about how i am curious about other cultures etc.
Hope this helps

Cool! I'm applying to some colleges; here's the essay questions:
Harvey Mudd College
Choose any two of the topics below. Your essays should each be approximately 250 to 700 words in length.
1. Tell us about yourself. We know which activities you do and what your academic record looks like, but what else should we know about you? What fun, cool, or interesting things about you won't fit into the categories on the application? Feel welcome to be clever or funny, or write in a way that reflects your personality.
2. Tell us about a recent experience in which you faced a difficult moral, ethical, or personal decision. Describe the situation, your actions, and whether the results affected your values or relationships with others.
3. Assuming the obligation and opportunity to affect change in your immediate community, where would you start and how would you use technology in your endeavor? Describe your cause, why it's worthwhile, and your proposal for its resolution.
Stanford
Short essays: (max 1600 characters)
1.Of the activities, interests and experiences you listed previously, which is the most meaningful to you, and why?
2.Sharing intellectual interests is an important aspect of university life. Describe an idea or experience that you find intellectually exciting, and explain why.
3.Write a note to your future roommate relating a personal experience that reveals something about you.
Long essay: (max 4900 characters) Choose one topic below:
a: ''A picture is worth a thousand words,'' as the adage goes. (You're limited to one page, however.) Sometimes a photo or picture can capture an object that you treasure, a person you admire or a place that you love; sometimes a photograph is simply your record of an experience or moment in your life. Imagine one photo or picture that you have, or would like to have, and tell us why it is meaningful to you.
b: As you reflect on your life thus far, what has someone said, written or expressed in some fashion that is especially meaningful to you? Why?
USC
In one paragraph, answer the following questions:
1.Tell us about an activity that is important to you, and why.
2.Describe your academic interests and how you plan to pursue them at USC.
3.OPTIONAL: Any information that you believe is relevant to our consideration of you as an applicant, but not already discussed or explained in your application.
Please write an essay, approximately 500-700 words (typically one page) in length on one of following topics:
1.The 18th century French philosopher Denis Diderot said, “Only passions, great passions can elevate the soul to great things.” Describe one of your passions and reflect on how it has contributed to your personal growth.
2.It is common knowledge that Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. What most people don’t know is that he tried over 6,000 times before succeeding. Reflect on an accomplishment you achieved in an unlikely way.
3.Newton’s First Law of Motion states that an object in motion tends to stay in motion in the same direction unless acted upon by an external force. Tell us about an external influence (a person, an event, etc.) that affected you and how it caused you to change direction.

For example,
Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois
was started by the King of Sweden's great great great grandfather who lent the college the religious books and bibles to start this seminary college.
It is now a great four year college.
So I would want to be admitted to this college because they have a B.A. program that offers many different courses of study and has one of the larges number of valedictorians for this small private college.
Why would you be an asset to this college? What did you research about this college?
Why do you want to study in this state?
Why college sports would you play?
What groups do you belong to at your high school?
What attributes do you have that make your work ethic special?
GOD bless.
