Why have chat rooms died? Why is it impossible to just want to chat with people without talking about sex?

Unfortunately, there are too many people in this world who go into chat rooms solely for the purpose of meeting strangers and trying to hook up. In this day and age it isn't even safe to do that, for many reasons! I heard a 35 year old guy who called in to a radio station bragging about how he hooked up with a 20 yr old girl he met on my space. Pretty messed up if you asked me, half these people either don't know or give a crap that their being used. I feel like b**ch slapping some of these girls! (lol). I personally don't even go into chat rooms anymore because no matter who I talk to, they usually steer the conversation towards sex and its annoying. Would those people, if faced with other strangers in real life, actually talk about sex so openly? Probably not. I like yahoo q&a because it is more fun than being bombarded with a lot of IMs about cyber sex and things like that. Or who knows, maybe people would think of me as a prude for being normal and preferring not to talk about sex with every stranger I meet! I'm not, they just wouldn't know it because they are strangers!!

Because people miss sex...? Society and religion say it's "bad" so people don't have as much as they'd like but it's in their minds all the time.....?
I don't know, just guessing. I thought this was a nice "place" to talk, a good subsitute for chat rooms and message boards.

I've noticed that, too!!! Its either about sex, or very dumb things. I can't relate to chatrooms anymore. They use to be so fun, but i think there are more sex addicts/weird people now....

I know on AOL, they are so immature, and if you say something that they don't agree with, you get banned right out of the room!

You can, you just can't let yourself be easily deteered everytime you hear something sexual. Sometimes you'll meet a friend that you can really talk to, usually you won't, but that's because they're just that special.

I don't dislike chat rooms because they're sexual I dislike them because they're usually bad at it. It's like, don't cyber if you don't know what you're doing heh.
