I recently inherited a fur coat from my Great Aunt. It is way out of style (from the 1920s, I think) with 3/4 length sleeves and the belt is a little animal head that "bites" its tail, and I just can't see myself wearing it. It is a full length mink (I think) Any ideas of what I can do with it? Throwing it out just seems wrong.

send it to me!

Vintage fur and vintage ANYTHING especially from the turn of the century is HOT as all get out right now!

If you feel you'd like it to be preserved, call your local historical society or museum and see about donating it. You could get a considerable tax deduction on your returns this year!

Take a pic of it, maybe beside a framed pic of your Great Aunt. Then you can frame the new pic, preserving the memory of your aunt, and the coat. Then I think you would be free to dispose of it any way you see fit. You could turn the moneys back over to some charity she approved of, or perhaps add it to a fund for her grand children/great grand children. If you were so inclined, you could stow it away in a trunk, and let the generations to come have their turn admiring it later. Good luck, whatever you do decide. Sounds like a treasure!

Burn it?! Are you mad?! I just inherited a fur coat and I fully intend on wearing it.. The animal has been dead for about 60+ years..!!! It's vintage!!! You should never ever burn anything that has sentimental value whether it be a postcard or a fur coat.. Stupid woman!

I have a VERY similar coat...except the mink is a stole that bites it's tail. My grandmother gave it to me. It means a lot to me but of course I would never wear it. I had it stored at a dry-cleaners so it stays preserved and I can still look at it. Go to a really good dry cleaners- they can talk to you about storage options.

Many women would pay thousands of dollars for a mink coat, just because its not your style dosent mean its not somebody elses. you could sell it or give it as a gift. ebay is probably the best way to go for your situation.

Check with furriers and stores that deal in vintage clothing. Someone might be willing to buy it from you if it is real mink.

turn it into a throw, a scarf, trim on boots,a hat, or a vest

i did the same thing, and I love that it's reuse of something that meant to much to my grandmother

but make sure you have someone experienced doing it

otherwise it could be a disaster

If I were you, then I would have the coat dry cleaned and then I would put it in storage. When you pass away you can give it to someone in your family(children, spouse, etc)

Donate it to PETA. They give it to people who are starving and don't have any clothes, and need them to keep warm. I don't believe in the fur trade or hunting, but if someone is fending for their own survival, it is justified to do what you have to do.
