it has to do with what you want to use it for if you just need a cell phone for calls if you brake down on the road then yea get a pay as you go so if you dont use it in a month or two you wont pay for something you wont use
but if your looking for a phone to use all the time i would get a plan. with plans you get a lot nicer phone i think then if you just pay 50$'s for the phone and the time

Yes, they work just as well.

I have Verizon INpulse prepaid.
The website told me I'd get unlimited night calling (from 9:01pm to 5:59am) and unlimited mobile to mobile with anyone in the Verizon network. Plus, it's only 10 cents a minute to talk to someone during the day or if they don't have Verizon. Also they take out 99 cents a night out of my account.

It is exactly how they said it and I couldn't be happier. Also, since I activated my phone over the phone with customer service, they keep sending me bonuses like free $5 minute cards and such. Best prepaid service I've ever had!
I buy one $30 card a month at Wal-Mart and I'm ready to go.

If you are not going to use the phone alot pay as you go is ok.But if you are going to use it on a daily basis you should just go ahead and get a plan because alot of the pay plans cost more in the long run if you use it daily.

Well, I'm not sure how good they make sounds. The basic negatives of pre-paid is that you almost always can't roam so the coverage is smaller. The price per minute is much more expesnsive compared to post-paid. I always recommend people to drop their home line and just use their cell phone if they think they will not use that many minutes. And make sure you compare cell phone carriers and select based on what you find important. You can have that automated here: http://www.cellufinder.com
