Metamucil isn't really a fast acting fix. What really works with some of the patients I take care of is to take Milk of Magnesia and mix it with prune juice. Then warm it up in the microwave. It doesn't taste really good though. Drink plenty of water. Walk. There are other medications on the market, but I don't think they work as fast.

Although many variables are included in this answer, it would be best to return to the doctor for a GI series of xrays. The length of time varies, but it also would depend on your eating behaviors before useage of metamucil. Constipation becomes concerning after 3 - 4 days, that is why you were provided with metamucil. Now, hopefully you will have a bowel improvement before seven days transpires. Ultimately, xrays would show fecal impaction, or another reason for your obstruction. Your age, other medical conditions, psychological stressors, street drug usage (marijuana), and familial history of colonic disease are important contributing factors. Another question would be...is there any blood in your stool. Ultimately, you need to return to the doctor. Good luck

If your really plugged up, seek help from a person doing hydrocolonics. That's an enema to the rest of you. They use a machine to fill you with fluid and them remove it with no pressure to the colon. Next consider why you are constipated. Undigested food is collecting in your colon. Why is undigested food getting through your stomach and intestines? Is your tongue working ok? Are you tasting your food? Some people don't taste food. Try brushing your tongue. Are you eating large meals? Eat less at meal time. Is your stomach making the digestive fluids to break down the food? Are you burping? Get some hydrocloric acid in pill or tablet form. Take it before meals. Are your intestines absorbing food? Check what comes out in the toilet. Do you see undigested particles? Use enzyme supplements. Do you have gas? Get some acidophilus and get that bacteria working again. If your still plugged up find an herbal laxative. Flush out the colon and get back on track.

Epsom salts work wonders, and work within 8 hours but you better stay by the toilet, that's all I can say. They are really cheap, too. They sell a milk carton size for about $3 and epsom salts are used to soak sore bodies and sore feet, but it's also used as a laxative...a very effective one that quite literally will blow you clean within a day. Whoa, Nelly!

If it's that bad and you don't want to wait for the Metamucil to kick in you could try a warm enema.
