I mean to say, i know there are some "good" movies around. But when was the last time you watched a movie (Cinema or DVD) and then said "Damn... that was just amazing"?

It seems to me like there are loads of "alright" movies around; but most just seem to be built-up around a single sceen or event, as if the idea for that came first and the rest was added later to fill in the time.

So what was the last movie that you watched that just blew you away - and why?

Some of my favs have been:
Highlander (original)
Seven (love movies with twists)
Star Wars (launched a whole new era)
LOTR (although i thought they'd kinda given up by the end)
Star Gate (interesting twist on an old theme)

All these were fantastic (to me at least) but i dont think there has been anything recently that has really had vision, lasting effect or has made me think about the topic after its finished.

is it just me; am i wrong ?

Did somebody seriously say "Snakes on a plane"?

That mind numbing drivel which was no more than a rehash of any plane disaster movie.

My god, the title tells you everything: there are snakes on a plane. that's pretty much it; action - ok; effects - ok; storyline - ****.

Will it be talked about for years to come; i think not.

Last time was Fight Club but I know what you mean the term great seems to be banded around so easily. Fight Club was just one of those movies that after seeing it I thought "what the f!"* was that" those kind of films that leave you reeling for a couple of days before watching it again and realising it was just as intelligent as you thought it was. Think back to Platoon, Gone with the wind, Goodfellas etc and compare some of them to the movies the press is so quick to brand great or classic. Before Fight club it must have been Heat, yeah I,m on the side of a remake here but damn! that WAS a great film.

I can't recall being 'blown away' since watching 'the matrix' and 'blade' on my home theatre system (6' projector) when it first came out. Both had original story-lines / music tracks and special effects which drew you in.

However, more recently, I did think Batman Returns was very good. Partly, because it did not revolve around guns as most American films do but mainly because it has a coherent story line which has a reasonable and consistent pace.

I was very disappointed to discover 'Superman Returns' was merely alright.

I saw Arlington Road a not so long ago and for me the sign of a good film is a thought provoking film, one that keeps the mind active during and after the film.Arlington road was great because the ending was not at all what I expected, so thumbs up

I know what you mean and you don't usually get that from mainstream, well-funded/-distributed big name films.

Recently got blown away when I watched a Korean film that received rave reviews a few years' back when it did the round of festivals. An AMAZING revenge film, totally engaging, quality performances and twists and turns to get you groaning and gasping (with shock that is!).

It's called, "Old Boy" and apparently another Asian film on Hollywood's let's-dumb-it-down-and-do-it-a-disservice-by-stripping-it-of-it's-grittiness list.

Watch it. Pretty violent, but then so are Tarantino films, but when you're that engaged...

I went to watch The Prestige last week at the cinema and it seriously is a brilliant film. You really have to watch and concentrate when you watch it but it has been so well thought about and the acting in it is brilliant, if you are going to watch any film that has come out in the last 6 months watch "The Prestige".

I remember watching Jurassic Park, and feeling like I'd just been on a roller-coaster.
It was one of the most exciting cinematic experiences I've ever had.
Then I went to see Schindler's List, and cried and cried.
It's a stunning piece of film-making.
Since then, the Harry Potter films, and Spiderman have excited me.
Also, The Incredibles (Pixar), was just brilliant.

Today I watched Apollo 13 and Forest Gump. I just missed Schindler's List but it is a great film and one that everyone should see. Another great film is The Shawshank Redemption.

Been a very very long time. There have been some entertaining movies made, but none that I walked out and went...WOW! I usually don't agree with people on their choices of film. Fav's have included...Titanic, Ed Wood, JFK, Gangs of New York.
Currently, movies to check out...Flags of our Fathers, Blood Diamond, The Departed.
