Did you forget the password to the default administrator account? Try booting your PC in safe mode by pressing F8 as it is booting up. In safe mode, a default administrator level account, called "Administrator" may appear. Most often, in my experience, this account is left without a password. Note that this account DOES NOT appear when you boot up normally.

Once you logon with the default Admin account, you can reset your user password.

If the default "Administrator" account has been disabled, or has a password, then try the first or second replies, and you will be able to reset the password, but you will not be able to recover it. (Unless you want to try cracking it, or pay for some services that will crack it).

Passwords are stored on any media after being hashed, so there's no way to restore a password even if you know the hash.
For the authentication process itself, it hashes the string you enter and compares it with the one stored to validate your account.

That would maybe work for NT but not XP.
Windows XP does not have a WINNT file.
