Liberalism = the "political religion" of a liberal.
Liberal = someone who tends to support (politically speaking in this case) freedom to change. For example: Why not let gays marry? Give them more FREEDOM. CHANGE! Etc.

Conservatism = the "political religion" of a conservative.
Conservative = someone who tends to want to hold on to security that NO change brings (politically speaking). For example: "The USA is built on the institution of the male/female family unit! If you go and change that, you're messing with the structure that we KNOW is safe and has kept the country together."

Both have value. Conservatives make sure that the valuable elements of our political system are not allowed to change! Like, freedom of speech and the right to a speedy trial etc. .....Liberals also protect our rights but they are more inclined to consider or cause change to "the old ways" (such as the gay marriage issue going on).

Trivia: Democrats are seen as more "liberal" while Republicans (note the term GOP or Grand OLD Party) tend to be seen as more conservative. There are "liberal republicans" and "conservative democrats" of course (also known as "moderates") to confuse matters further! lol

A lot of people are "against it" (liberalism) because it is the changers (the liberals) who tend to support societal change (such as gay marriage). Hope that helped!

Political parties, throughout American history, have always bashed each other. It's un-American to try to 'even out' differences between the parties, since it's only through differences that change is made. If every party had the same or very similar viewpoints, voters would not have a lot to choose from, and a lot of people would not be represented. There aren't a lot of people against Liberalism, but it depends where you leave. Here in California, liberalism is very popular. Liberals are, ideally, pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, pro-gay, anti-religion in school and government, pro-diversity, and pro-environment.

There are 'Moderates' too.. the in between folks. The problem is no one can really say what makes someone one thing or the other... labels really are not that useful.
