Is she underwieght or a serious athlete? Sometimes those conditions can limit the number of periods. She needs to see a doctor, though. It can screw up her bone density and hormones if she isn't having regular periods at that age.

No, it is not normal if she is a healthy young woman. She should see a doctor or go to a health department for a check-up if she is unable to pay for a doctor. This does not mean that she can not become pregnant because she could start at any time. All sorts of things can cause this including anexoria and bulimia.

Please urge her to see a doctor at once.

She should go to the doc to find out. But I have a friend in her 40s who only gets one per year, two on a good year, and she's normal. That's just how her body works.

Oddly enough though, she and her husband got pregnant on their first two attempts.

Well, if she is just 17, then her periods just started not long in her teens , so they will get normal as she gets older.
She may get regular by 18 or 19.
Hang in there, she is ok.

I have that same problem where I only get one or two a year. She may need to go on birth control to regulate them. My gyn told me that for me, it was low estrogen.

that is not normal. she may have a hormonal imbalance and needs to see a gynecologist. she may require treatment to give her a monthly period. have her search "polycystic ovarian syndrome" on the internet

At seventeen, she should see a gynecologist; just to check she is coming along normally.
