there is already an existing internet in the house, and i just want to know if there is something i need to get or do to connect the new laptop to use the internet

If you have a wireless router setup than all you need to do is either configure the laptop if it has wireless ot buy a wireless USB device.

To connect wirelessly, you will need a wireless router. And your laptop will have to have a wireless card in it already, or you will have to buy one of those too. Most laptops come with them already these days.
To connect with a wire, you will need a switch of some sort to be able to connect your laptop and your tower at the same time to the internet.
Or just unplug the network cable from you tower and plug it into the network port on your laptop, and then put it back when your done.

it depends if you have dialup or broadband. dialup is a bit tricky although i managed to create a wireless network based on a dialup connection in my home. If you have broadband, go pick up a wireless router and instructions will be included.
