I would love to say "yes" but then I have to consider that there are women who kill their children for various reasons.
This would not exactly be labelling motherhood as "instinct."

Yes. I think at least the physical aspect of it is an instinct. It's what keeps the species alive. Because when you think about it from a logical standpoint, it makes no sense. You want and love something that will bring you a whole lot of pain, both physical and emotional. And when you ask any woman about labor pains, she'll tell you that it is forgotten the minute it comes out. At which point the emotional strain begins (all mixed in with the love, I'm sure).
I say it is an instinct also because I feel it. My mind and my heart do NOT want a baby. Yet I see see the different urges that my body produces. At 34, I've noticed a deeper awareness of my fertile days. There's a hunger there. An urge to mate that seems to come solely from my body, completely ignoring the total rejection of my mind.

I think that motherhood is partly instinct that most women have and some don't (I'm thankfully one of the some). But humans aren't as instinctive as other animal and must be taught. Still, some of us don't have that instinct. I think there are more women now (than years ago...) who do not have that instinctive desire to have babies. I'm sure that it has something to do with the fact that there are too many people already.

There are certainly at least certain aspects of motherhood that are instinct. It's a natural part of feminine nature. The instinct is certainly something that can be overridden, though. As a result, there are some women that make bad mothers, just as there are certain men that make bad fathers. But witness most women's reaction to babies...it's fairly telling.

No,you learn from your Mother it is implanted on you brain that part that learns motherhood.I was raised without a father when my wife had our first child I had no ideal how to be a father I had to learn how to be one.I read books in each book I read stated if a child was raised without a parent or a male or female in there life then we don't know how to be one.A lot is instinct,if the baby cry's it is hungry or need its draper. If it cry's real hard then it is sick or running a fever take it to the Doctor. But love is not an instinct and the child cant live without love.

No, because humans do not have instincts. An instinct, an action or pattern found through out a whole species, is not present at all in humans. If human motherhood was an instinct, all mothers would parent and have the same reactions to their babies. Also, there would be no abusive mothers, neglectful mothers, or rejecting mothers.

No I don't think so. Is britney spears instinctively leaving her kid at home while she goes out and makes a fool of herself? I agree with pyschgirl. I believe it is a response to the situation. Some are good at it while others are not. The same goes with fathers.

I think that most of it is instinct, but alot of it is common sense too.I believe that woman were born with a motherly instinct, but some dont know what to do with it, or how to use it. Some women just dont want to be mothers and some of us dont know how to be anything else.

Yes, for both men and women.
Right after childbirth the mother's blood stream is flooded with chemicals that make her feel very protective of little helpless cute things. They are doomed, it's not their fault. ;)
But the VERY interesting thing is that men (and other women) who are around a new born for about two days have the same flood of the same chemicals in them.
Motherhood is contagious. We don't catch it from mothers; we catch it from babies.
Neat.

I think some women naturally have maternal instincts and others can be taught them.
