They are one in the same. One person with two personalities. David Fincher leads you on a journey the whole movie thinking that they are actually two people...BUT they are not. Towards the end of the movie there are huge huge signs. Watch the movie again with that knowledge, it will make sence. A great deal of people don't get this movie. You either really like it or hate it. I think you have to be older..say in your 30's to comprehend what he was trying to get at. Everyone has a split personality and when things are difficult or mondane people try to reinvent themselves or run away from problems.
..Just my thoughts

Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) is a result of rebellion in the Narrator's (Edward Norton) typical life filled with consumerism and routines. He indulged his inner desires using the Tyler Durden identity, while a couple hints were given throughout the entire movie, such as the line from the Narrator that says "I know this because Tyler knows this".
As for the suicide part, it tells you putting a bullet in your mouth does not guarantee death.

The narrator (Edward Norton and we do not understand the nature's call), is living an uneventful, tedious life. He is going to paintings and is derived decrease back to the run of the mill Ikea abode. He meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt). you'll discover how they're completely opposite. On one hand, Norton is rather conservative and uptight, at the same time as Pitt is going with the bypass and is slightly wild. in the approach the action picture, we are given tricks of Norton slowly loosing his thoughts. Insomnia, blowing up his condominium, and going to the conferences. interior the end, we see that Norton only has different personalities which ought to confront one yet another. Norton repressed his extra violent outspoken area for for see you later now that he created yet another personality. He shoots himself killing both figuratively, and merging them into one personality. imagine of it as Norton being the angel and Pitt being the devil, and he had to sort of get a center floor. The strive against membership itself is probable only a way for well-known human beings like the narrator to enable free and get out of the social norm. I imagine most of the members experienced similar subject matters as Norton.
