Also, this website has a great collection of sock knitting links:

Some great generic sock patterns:

My favorite sock book is Cool Socks, Warm Feet by Lucy Neatby

Socks are not difficult to knit. If you can increase, decrease, pick up stitches and knit in the round, you can knit socks. "Folk Socks" by Nancy Bush has a decent basic sock pattern, then many other folk-inspired patterns. "Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles" by Cat Bordhi demonstrates the techniques for adapting socks to the two-circs method. Though I'd been knitting socks on double-points for ages, once I learned the two-circs method, my double-points have been gathering dust *LOL* Two-circs is definitely easier and the technique is demonstrated on this website:

http://www.az.com/~andrade/knit/twocirculars.html

Play with the technique a bit, then try it with a simple sock pattern. It seems awkward at first but you'll get the hang of it much faster than trying to juggle 4 double-points (I say that from experience......) *LOL*

Editting to add, found the sock site I was looking for. Much information here, with links to good basic patterns:

Feel free to email me if you need help with socks. They really are much easier than it seems.

Socks aren't that hard. I love them--definitely my favorite thing to knit.

Good basics-and the site has a number of different methods, from dpn's (my personal favorite) to using two circs to the Magic Loop method, using only one circ: http://www.royea.net/sockdemo1.html

Some alternate methods, once you have the basics down: http://world.std.com/~kcl/ksocks.htm

And lots and lots of good tips: http://www.az.com/~andrade/knit/socks.html

Worry not--if you can knit, purl, and read a pattern, you can knit socks!

I can recommend www.royea.net socks 101. I'd never even attempted socks before but the instructions are very clear and helpful.

You could find a book at michaels or jo anns. But not many people knit socks...the heel is very difficult. It's for very advanced knitters.
