Is the U.S. going to cease from being a superpower, and if so what will be the ramifications if it does? Will there be another dark ages like after the Roman Empire fell, or will China assume to role of the worlds major player (or perhaps another county?).
And if so how will things change for western countries?

It will only fall if idiotic conservatives cause people to hate this country, or by starting wars for no reason. If not, China and the E.U. will take the dominant rolls in the world, and we will be nothing more than the next "UK".

The United States will eventually cease to be the only superpower. Unless it breaks up like the Soviet Union, though, it will always be a strong nations.

Another Dark Ages, no. But, imagine how a bunch of kids act when the parents leave. That's how the world will go.

Without the sheer might of the US hanging overhead, nations will start acting more freely. China will take Taiwan, the Arabs will attack Israel again, North Korea might march on S. Korea, etc.

'Course, if the US suddenly collapses instead of slowly weakening, it will throw the world economy for a loop. Likely a Second Great Depression.

I am afraid that we will fall, eventually. We have villianized nationalism to the point where people are no longer proud to be American's (Dixi Chicks, Green Day), we have degraded morality to the point where there are no absolutes, (one of the reasons the GOP lost the mid terms, but also look at Britney's recent comando appearances), we have the most powerful military on the face of the earth, but cannot win wars due to political correctness, and fear of world opinion.
Yes we are going to fall, and yes there will be negative results from our fall. Though I doubt we will enter a second dark ages (unless Islam takes control), the world will enter a world wide economic depression.
I think that China has the potential, manpower, and will power to step up to the plate and claim the title if and when we do succumb. We live in interesting times thats for sure.

Don't have my crystal ball handy, but based on the responses you've gotten--it's not looking too good. The general consensus appears to be that as long as we have nukes and a military, and aren't afraid to use 'em, we'll stay on top of the heap.

Great countries lead the way because they foster science, technology, discovery, education and enlightenment. Free thinking. Ideas. That's what makes them 'superpowers'--look at the great advances made by the Roman empire, or Egypt, or Greece. Yes, they had armies, yes, they conquered territory, but the true gifts they utilized, and bequeathed to the world, were the great advances in education, science, literature, and the arts they used their wealth to promote, and incorporate into their lives.

America has done the same in her brief lifetime, but now her wealth is being funnelled into war, and the future of her children is mortgaged and hobbled by staggering debt. As during the Dark Ages, government funding for science and art now only happens if the project meets "Christian approval." Education funding has been slashed. Education quality is on a long downward trend, to the point that students in countries like India get far better educations than ours. Call those 'flaws,' look the other way, sing our praises if you like, but don't you dare be surprised when other countries surpass us. In all categories but nukes, of course.

All empires eventually fade and the current US hegemony will faded sooner or later. It is currently unclear which nations will take dominance after the US decline.
It is unlikely that anything like the European dark ages (don't forget much of the rest of the world remained 'enlightened' during this period even if Europe wasn't) could come into being as there is plenty of intellectual development in the rest of the world.

America and Britain, have plans, and Russia, and China, have there own plans to rule the world. We'll just have to wait and see how it all comes down. I don't think we have much say about it. Actually, right now, there are plans for The Pan American Union. If you don't know what that is, it's Canada, America, and Mexico, with open borders, and one entity controlling everyone. I'm pretty sure we're not going to like that one.

We heard about great egypt as Pharoah

I think, the Islam world will be next major player.

The US has over 5,000 nuclear weapons that will make sure it stays a Superpower for quite some time. If Rome had had nukes they would have survived a lot longer too.

Just as with all other great Empires, America will fall. It will collapse from within, just like all the previous Empires. Liberalism leads to higher crimes, illiteracy and a weaker military.

....I think alot of americans are just dissapointed that the Iraq war is lost....hardly the death knell of America....but its no victory chime either....Where does that leave us? We are still a superpower...but we need to brave.....Iraq could have been a wonderful democratic hub...it was a noble pursuit....
