Answer:
A missed period (amenorrhea) in someone who has always had regular periods is often the first sign of pregnancy. It sometimes takes several days beyond the missed period before the home pregnancy test becomes positive, so you may want to repeat it. Your doctor could also do a blood hCG hormone test, which is more reliable and becomes positive about 10 or so days after ovulation.
Most doctors recommend that you wait until the first day of your missed period before taking a home pregnancy test. This is usually around two weeks after conception. However, some tests are more sensitive (and more expensive) than others and can be taken earlier. Concentrations of hCG are reported in milliInternational Units (mIU) or amounts equal to 1/1000th of an IU per milliliter. A pregnancy test with a sensitivity of 20 IU/L is more sensitive than one with 50 IU/L.

By 14 days after fertilization (about the time you would expect your period), most home pregnancy tests may be able to detect the hormone in your urine and give you a positive result. In fact, you're much more likely to get an accurate result if you wait until a week after your expected period before testing. However, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is detectible in the blood serum of only about 5% of pregnant women 8 days after conception. So remember, a negative result may in fact be a positive a few days later. Most early home pregnancy tests say they can detect pregnancy about 10 days after ovulation (about 4 days before your expected period). However, the earlier you start testing, the higher chance of getting a false negative. You must confirm your results with blood pregnancy tests to be absolutely sure.

After sex usually a person has more of an accurate reading a few days after your missed period. There are some that read a few days before your missed period and can show positive. However, it may not always show positive depending on levels of hcg. If a person misses a period and still has none after a test check with doctor or wait a little, take a test and then see a doctor..

During your whole nine months of pregancy your body is still producing HCG the hormone which is detected on a test, yes they are reliable. if your still worried i would see your GP for a blood test for pregnancy and other things it may be something else. Good Luck

Most pregnancy tests dont even work until you miss your first menstural cycle. I know they have the "early prediction" ones now, but those are only good a few days before your cycle.

Everyone here was right, 10-14 days or after you miss your period: but ALWAYS try it at the first morning pee at that time. The hormone is better detected in the morning.
