Of course any revolution is illegal under the law and government it is overturning/abolishing. But the Founding Fathers believed what they were doing was the right thing to do. They believed in natural law. So, though they noted that what they were doing was guilty under English law, they argued that it was perfectly upright in the eyes of "Nature's God." Read the Declaration of Independence. It's a tough document to read because it uses mostly dated words, but you'll notice that they were firm believers in natural law. The revolution was an act of civil disobedience.

Every revolution is an illegal act towards the people being revolted against. But, most revolutions are a result of governments enforcing illegal laws against people's most basic rights.

The major question that underlined the lead up to the American Revolution was if the colonist represented in the British Parliament. Keep in mind each state was independent of the others and while Virginia was founded by Royal charter, Pennsylvania was not so, yes, some states were breaking their charter other were not clear on why they were paying taxes to England when they were not represented and it citizenry was not even of British origin. Those states were simply casting out a foreign power.
