Women who have polycystic ovary syndrome can have chin hairs, and since she's 47, she is, in all likelihood, going into perimenopause, which will mean less estrogen and more androgens, causing the chin hairs.

There is light therapy to get rid of them, as well as electrolysis. However, if your friend hasn't asked for help, I wouldn't say anything. She knows she has them, and your mentioning it will only serve to make her mad and self-conscious about it.

A few hairs on your chin is completely normal! If it's a lot it could be excess testosterone, but if you're someone with thick dark hair on your head it's not necessarily anything abnormal, most Greeks and Indians have hair like that. Why are you worrying so much about it anyway? If she doesn't like it, she can wax.

Its actually called Hirsutism--excessive hair growth in women and it is not uncommon.

You can read more about it here.

In most cases, hirsutism is a symptom of elevated blood levels of male hormones (androgens) being produced by the adrenal glands or ovaries, says Maria New, chairwoman of pediatrics and chief of endocrinology at Cornell Medical Center in New York City. Sometimes, the hormone levels are normal but certain hair follicles are thought to be hypersensitive to the androgens testosterone and androstenedione. In rare instances, an androgen-secreting tumor or polycystic ovarian disease is to blame. Occasionally, no cause can be found. According to Dr. McMichael, hirsutism can begin at any age, but most patients develop symptoms during their childbearing years.

Has this always been part of her appearance? If not its probably because of her hormones changing due to age or she may be taking hormones. She may not notice them as things that gradually happen sometimes seem natural to us, I know it took someone pointing out to me that I was getting alot of facial hair before I actually noticed. So just casually mention it to her. She may want to start plucking the more noticeable ones or bleach them.

This could be due to a testostrone imbalance in her body. Yes, testosterone is found in females, but usually in smaller amounts. But the amount her in body could be influencing her body to grow hairs.
