Good quality diamonds are running about $2,000.00 a carat, unmounted. The cost of larger, high quality diamonds increase very quickly, because they're not as readily available. I'd think you will probably spend 5 to 6 thousand on a stone the size and quality you mention. Never buy a diamond pre-mounted ... the mounting reflects thru the stone and alters the color you see. You should also do a little research on diamond buying before you go. Only deal with reputable dealers.

If you had any knowledge, particularly regarding larger stones, you wouldn't have posted this question on the Internet! The 3 C's of diamond buying are Cut, Color and Clarity. You need to know what makes one stone worth more than another. Do you know what 'inclusions' are? All stones, regardless of the 3 C's have them. What size and variety of inclusions lower the value of a stone? Get on line or into the library and do some research before an unscrupulous jeweler takes you money for something you didn't even know you were buying!

The intentions are good , but silver is too soft to last more than a few years at best, are you sure it is diamonds, as it is most unusual for silver to be graced with diamonds, at least with diamonds of high quality. Also did you consult even a little with the lady as to what she would like? I have seen a few ladies a bit disappointed, that they did not like the style or color. Did you spend one or two weeks wages? , but that is not so relevant , if funds are low at the moment you can always upgrade at a later time. Normally it would be expected to give a ring with a few weeks salary maybe even a months, and one that will last a bit of wear and tear, silver is normally considered "costume" jewelery. In 20 years I have only made one silver engagement ring. But it is more important that love is the center of the relationship. I would be interested to hear what happened. God's blessings to you both.

If you look around different dealers and compare their prices (for all different sizes, not just 2k, you might get a general idea of how much it should cost. I wouldn't recommend asking a dealer what to expect, however, because it's not very likely that you'll get a straight answer.
