Well first off we'd have to define the true meaning of christmas. Which is religiously based and the whole meaning behind it was celebrating the birth of christ/jesus. The idea of gift giving came from how the magis who visited the mary and josepth broth gifts for them to celebrate the birth of jesus. In short the meaning of it was to give thanks for the bith of 'our savior' as people of religion like to put it. Now days the meaning of christmas has been, in terms of companies, racking up alot of money, and people exchanging gifts. Although the idea of giving thanks may be there for many while exchanging gifts, I dont think the true meaning has been kept and it's just become a yearly thing to do for everyone and as marketing began to rise and rise, the idea of santa cluse was born to help create a marking atmosphere of christmas being about buying and giving gifts.

As for the lie of santa I think that's up to the parents as to weather they want to. I dont think it really hurts children to make them believe a fat guy in a red suite and white beard gives them gifts as many people often create stories to their children. If we were to stop that would mean the tooth fariy and all other things should be as well. But i think most children after a young age (as santa is to appeal to young children) figure out it's their parents giving them gifts and aren't usually emotionally scarred by learning that. So I think it dosent hurt to have the idea of santa, but i do think the meaning of christmas has been lost for alot of people.

I have battled with that Question for what seems like ever.
We're suppose to teach our Children not to lie from the time they understand what a lie is. Yet we start lying to them almost from the start.(Santa,Easter bunny etc.) With my Children I toOK a page out of my Mothers book and use the rule DO AS I SAY NOT AS I DO. I hope when there old enough that I did so so they would have the Magic of Christmas that every Child deserves. My Santa's Christmas Memories are some of my best Memories of my Childhood all of us together as a Family Christmas Morning and seeing my Kids faces Christmas Morning makes it ok to Fib a bit so a Child can have some of that same Magic I remember so fondly.

Heck No! I told my daughter that Santa didn't exist when she was 4 years old. She came home and asked me why the Santa at her school was Black but the one she saw in the mall was white? She also asked why at Sunday school do they talk about christmas being the celebration of Baby Jesus' birth but no one talks about Santa. I told her that there wasn't a real Santa. The people who love her are the ones who buy the gifts. I even explained that Christmas day- Dec. 25th isn't the actual day Jesus was born but that's when people celebrate. She was fine with it. I believe the true meaning of this holiday is not religious unless you worship the dollar! Christmas now is so commercial that stores start putting up decorations Halloween night. It's all about spending money. I prefer just to think about spending quality time with my family but since most of us work at jobs that don't get the holiday off we end up celebrating the Sunday afterwards.

I think we should tell the truth that Santa exist in everyone.
Christmas is the time where families bond and a time of giving.
I think the true meaning of Christmas is not lost. Its all within us.

As long as the spirit of Christmas still lingers in our home....santa will still exist. However, my children know the true reason for the season and they are only 5 & 7. If asked, they will tell you that we celebrate the birth of Jesus on this day!

I have many views about this. I think that that to lie is a sin. We must not lie unless it is to the benefit of another. Then again, the concept of Santa gives hope to many children around the world and exites them. All in all, I don't think one should lie to children about Santa Clause

It's meaning....Christmas's meaning is to simply be w/ family eat delicious stuff, the traditional gift exchange, and mostly to celebrate the birth of Christ. If more people want to deprive themselves of this, then let them be. They'll realize what there doing sooner or later. As long as there are still people in the world who HAVE a Christmas Spirit, it will most likely spread again.

Heck no! Why continue telling children about a lie? They are in constant waiting for a being that never existed! Has Santa replaced Jesus? Christmas is about Christ, but people, I assume, do not want to be reminded of that. They want to continue to wait for that individual that will never come. Why not tell children that on that day YOU, the buyer, will be bringing them their gifts? There is no need in lying to them-THAT'S DECEITFUL!!!

Of course, Santa is fun for the kids. Christmas is about the birth of Christ, and also about spending time with family and friends.

Although it is, I don't see it as a lie. The tradition must go on. Hope is the real meaning of that in children and must not end.
And yes is not completely lost, but there is too much advertising around it.
