Your hunch was right. It's animated GIF. If your into this kinda thing download the 'Pivot Stick-figure Animator' from http://www.snapfiles.com/get/stickfigure.html and you can make your own animations with stick figures and create your own creatures and interactive environments. It's great fun and feels very rewarding when you complete an animation!

it is a gif. You need a program and the images to use as frames to make one.
