If you are interested in joining an AKA grad chapter, do you need a "sponsor" and what is a "sponsor"?

I'm interested in joining a grad chapter, but don't know if I will need a sponsor. I have heard other interests mention it, but I'm not sure what a sponsor does for interests.

A sponsor is another person who offers guidance and support on a one-on-one relationship. Our sponsors give us the support that we need till we can know the group well enough that we can walk on our own, but they will always be there when we need then, well at least they should be. You can look at a sponser as being a big brother/sister or mentor as well.
