I know you can connect with a component cable, but are the games really HD?

No max resolution is 480p Nintendo stated the Wii was not going to be hi def just Hi fun,as it was not competing with Sony and Microsoft in the graphic department. and they would stress gameplay over dazzling graphics

The best the Wii can do is 480p, so the picture will be comparable to how a DVD looks on your setup.

No its not, but playing it with components in a HDTV it will look better.
