Up until somewhere around the age of 40, the bones in your skull are connected together by a fibrous connective tissue, but are still slightly mobile. Somwhere around this time, the tissue begins to ossify, and the bones fuse together and are no longer able to move. Of course, everybody is different and this doesn't happen at the same time for everyone.

The fontanels in our skull are usually fully fused by age 2.
