So My 2001 Cheverolet Impala LS (3.8L Engine) has recently started to have a "rough idle" which also carries over to coasting (foot off the pedal) when driving.

RPM's will bounce from 1000 to 750 then bounce back up to around 1200 and up.

This does not/not happen when the car is under load (ie: accelerating - as I know I had a problem years back with a corroded spark plug wire which would fire, but at around 2500-3000 (heaviest load) it was unable to deliver, and would cause much more noticeable bogging.

I have checked the plugs, wires, terminals, no corrosion whatsoever.

I am leaning towards this being more of a Transmission problem or perhaps engine.

This car certainly has had it's share of problems, and had a used 2004 Transmission put in it (out of a wreck with 13K on it) about 30K ago (making the tranny about 43Km's old - never rebuilt).
This was replaced about 1.5 yrs ago.

I do have extended warranty, however the company that provides it does not/not pay for diagnosis, nor down-time when the vehicle is in the shop (no rental). The deductible for use of the warranty is minimal ($100), and covers pretty much everything bumper-to-bumper.

Do note that this is the 4th transmission this car is on, and it's second engine (thanks to gm and their manifold coolant leaks). It has been, a total lemon.

That said, I still have 1.5 yrs of warranty.. and want to have it repaired, so I can atleast get a decent re-sale or trade in.

thanks for your thoughts guys - even guesses at this point would be appreciated in order to minimize my downtime in choosing the shop that will look at it (general, transmission, engine, etc.)

Cheers!

Simon

***Please note, the rought idle is not constant, it only does it ever 30second-1 minute of idling, then relapses ever so often, it is not a constant roughness.. it is USUALLY VERY SMOOTH - just happens to feel like a mis-fire every so often..

ie: sitting at a light.... smooth smooth (at 900 rpm)... then 'drop' to 700rpm, bounces back to 1200 rpm, then settles back to 900rpm... smooth.. smooth... smooth.. and eventually repeat...

If the car is idling rough and is in park, I don't think the problem is in your transmission. One thing you might want to check is the throttle body. It sounds to me that sludge has built up. Take it to a garage and have them clean it or buy some carb cleaner, take off the duct from the air cleaner to the throttle body and try cleaning it out. Just spray the cleaner on a clean rag and reach in and start scrubbing. It takes some time and you'll have to keep respraying the rag but it will come clean. Use a small mirror to make sure you got all of the build up removed

having front defroster or a/c on can make some vehicles idle kinda like that when there on.
