I used to love watching it as a kid, but I can't find out anything about it nowadays.

Like many older anime series, at the time many weren't always put onto vhs etc and because it's an older anime series that was around when big anime companies that specialied in anime to bring to home video nowdays, it was just for on tv and when the broadcasting ended it dissapeared and the likelyness of an older anime series like that being brought back remastered is slim.
and the orginal name of the show was Mazinger Z which might also explain why you had a hard time finding info on it. Do a search on that and you'll find sites. If you were looking into watching it again it seems few places have actual DVDs that were made. here is one
