Where is the story taking place in the book Love in the Time of Cholera?

Question

Is the story taking place in Columbia (in South America) or is the setting a Caribbean island? Are the characters South American Indians? What nationality are they?
One character is called a "quadroon," meaning one fourth black. Is that one fourth African and three fourths European? Then how can the character be Indian?
I am trying to understand the geographical location of the story and the ethnicity of the characters.

Please answer if you have read the book and know the answer. I don't want to read the spoiler on wikipedia and I am aware the author is from Columbia. I want to know the setting for the story and the ethnicity of the characters if someone out there knows. Thanks.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez set theee novel in the end of the 19th century and then the story continuous thru the 20th possibly until the 20's or 30's,the characters varies in terms of races,but is because that's a fundamental part in the idiosyncrasies of what
happen from the so called colonization of the Americas,that's why you found different races mix up in the book,my advice ;
try to read some historical facts so you can have a better understanding about it,but if I'm not mistaken the main subject
is about some unconditional love and how it remains faithful as times goes by,cause he mixes some political elements,and
very extremist points of view,after all he have won the novel prize
of literature,another thing that maybe can help you up is ,search
for the cholera decease to see how is defined in term of symptoms
and probably you can have the right time when the story develops
and have a better understanding,but i can tell you this: you are a very refined and intellectual person because of your reading preference ,in this case this book !!!

Gabriel Garcia Marquez (the author) is from Colombia, so maybe takes place in Colombia.
