1,503 died as a result of the sinking.
The two major actions that would have prevented the deaths that I can think of off the top of my head... The captain could have been less irresponsible, and there could have been more life boats available for the ship.

Well, from what I understand, when the ship first hit the iceberg, it took a little while before someone even noticed it. Then, when people did notice that the ship was taking on water, they sent out SOS calls for help, but either ships were too far away and couldn't get there in time to help, or never heard the distress calls. Also, the Titanic was the biggest ship of it's day, I think? and it was considered "unsinkable" so when the calls that it was sinking went out, no one took them seriously at first, until it had already become too late.
There were not enough lifeboats on board the ship for all of the passengers, which is now a requirement nowdays, but wasn't at the time.
Also, many of the lifeboats were sent out with just a few people on each one, not fully loaded with people, because so many people chose to stay behind, or they elected to go ahead and send the lifeboats out before fully filling them up.
I believe about 1200 people perished? I'm not certain of that though.

No offense, but you could find thousands of hours of research by using the www.
I've studied and researched the Titanic disaster often in my 63 years, and it seems as a species we are drawn to that sort of thing.
To directly answer your Q. FAR too many.
It did prove a few things however in a most devestating way.
$$$Money$$$ doesn't float any better than poverty.
No one should ever say "Unsinkable" Outloud
Boats designed for 50 took took away only 4 in many cases.
Many Boats never made it upright, into the water, because far too many people, especially in higher class status, believed "Unsinkable" and partied, while steerage class drown without ever seeing the top decks.
The water temp at the time couldn't "support" human life for more than a few minutes.
