I love fanfiction, and I have been writing fanfiction for nearly seven years now. I have a respect for fanfic writers, but I also realize that among diamonds there will be coal. Because of the general ease of use on the site ff.n gets a bad rep for all of the crap that gets posted. On the one hand, the bad writers can get a chance to improve based on the critique they receive in reviews. On the other hand, no one wants to wade through all of that bad writing either. As for flaming, the only time I do that is when the story is really hateful (i.e. racist, hate based, full of vitriol, etc etc.) Mary Sues really do suck, and so do the male version Gary Stus. A good writer knows how to make original characters relative to the readers, and realistic, and all without compromising the story or the characters.

I agree with you, I hate it when people make everyone gay.
For example, when you make a Disney character, the CSI guys or the boys of OTH (One Tree Hill) and the OC gay. This to me does not make sense. And I hate bad grammar, spelling, and very short stories. With mostly notes taking up space. I mean come on now there is a spell check, please use it.
And because of this I have to admit I have flamed a few people. But I hate the fanfiction.net staff are lazy because they will take or delete accounts with songfics but people with bad grammar and spelling get to keep their accounts. Just plain stupid.
Thanks for letting me vent.

i respect fanfiction, but what gets me are the people who cant come up with anything original, and all they can do is take two or more established story points and try to tie them together with the thinnest thread possible, or outright make up BS to make things work...
wait a minute, comic book publishers and film producers do this same thing all the time... nevermind...
fanfiction rules...

Mary sue characters are pretty much the result of writing from someone still new to writing or doesn't understand proper storytelling requires their characters to have faults and/or weaknesses.

absolutely. i work hard on my fanfics and i hope people like them, yet they will not even review it!!!! i especially hate pwp's. those can't even be called fanfictions because they are nothing but wild fantasies of some obsessed fans. i also hate it when people talk bad about ur fics yet there own is horrible. i think bad fanfictions come from bored people who are incredibly bored.

YES! I hate, hate, HATE it when people make bad fanficctions! I hate it when they use l33t, bad grammer, don't research, and make everyone OOC. (out of character). If you do this, please go to your stories and revise them! Little things count! Don't be one of the annoying masses that do this! Fight for your right to good fanfiction! ^-^
