A more reactive metal replaces a lesser reactive metal in a compound OR
A more reactive nonmetal replaces a lesser reactive nonmetal in a compound.

Your teacher should provide an Activity Series Reference Table.

Ex Magnesium is more reactive Copper, so

Mg +CuSO4 ->MgSO4 + Cu

and Fluorine is more reactive than chlorine, so

F2 + 2HCl -> 2HF + Cl2

In a single displacement reaction a free element replaces a different element in a compound,a new compound was formed with the single element from the left side of the equation. A different free element will be on the right side.

e + cpd--->E + Cpd
