A little-known fact:
After the death of his wife Martha, J. never remarried. He did, however, have a 40-year long relationship with her slave Sally. Sally was labeled "black," but in fact had only about 25% black blood and was closely related to Martha. Sally's owner (Martha's father) was also her father. Moreover, the same was true for her mother.
When J. went to France as an ambassador, he sent for his daughter to come over. Sally accompanied her as her personal servant. By the time they got back to the US, Sally was 16 and pregnant with J's first child by her. They had a total of 7 children together.
