Your nurse in the mental hospital?

The dreaded nurse that used to come to the school with her smelly metal comb. She used to line us up like little soldiers and rip the metal comb through our hair and if you were lucky you didnt have to be humiliated by walking out with a bottle of suleo shampoo and a nit comb!
No wonder nits are rife these days though............no more nitty nora!

In the thirty's and the forty's nits were prevalent in most schools and nurses used to go round with a special comb called a nit and flea comb it had such fine teeth that it picked up any nits or fleas , if she found any the family they were visited by fumigators who fumigated there house , it was a disgrace to be one of the unfortunates . hence they got the name of nitty Norah

My best friends mum, the school nurse when i was at Primary..you'd all stand in a line and await your turn where she had a good root through your hair looking for nits, as a monkey would do...funny when i imagine it now.....A for where the name came from...probably some 10 year old made it up one day and like Chinese whispers it got passed on...

Unfortunately they don't have them anymore. They used to come in check your hair for nits, they'd also check your mouth and tongue, monitor your height and weight.
Now because of cut backs they have been done away with, and it is coincidence that head lice are out of control in schools.

Yes,Stevie B is correct! I remember the humiliation of being lined up to get your head checked. In our school she was a big burly piece who knew nothing about discretion or tact.If you had them you were named and shamed!
