Ok, i've done a lot of research on this fact, some say that it will be the end some say this:
This is what's happening on 12-21-2012: The Mayan Long Count calendar is rolling over from 12 Baktuns to 13 Baktuns (similar to our calendar going from 1999 to 2000 except a Baktun is 400 years long). Also on that morning, which is the winter solstice, there will be an astronomical alignment between the sun and the dark spot on the Milky Way at dawn.
The Maya believed that the dark area of the Milky Way was the birth canal of the universe, so when the sun came up through that dark area, it was being reborn (so you had that part of it correct). But our old world wasn't going to die at that moment. It's already dead and has been for years.
Ya, i found that online, but what really is going to happen then? Please i need to know. I hope that this doesn't happen cuz i'd really like to have a family, and i'd only be 19 than.

Since the dawn of mankind, we humans have been predicting the end of the world, and the universe. All of these predictions vary in nature, but all predictions have one thing in common: they've all been wrong.

There is no reason to believe that anything unusual will happen, just as when our calender needs to be renewed at the end of December life will go on. Even if the sun aligns with a dark area of the Milky Way it doesn't mean that the sun is in any unusual place. It will in fact be pretty much where it is now because it moves through the Milky Way so slowly (any just so you know it is a good, safe place to be).
I also don't think that the sun's alignment with a certain spot on the Milky Way (which is, from our point of view almost purpendicular (making a + shape) to the path that the sun and planets take through the sky) can be very different on that day from what it is now (or what it will be on the solstice of the year 2011). I'd be interested in seeing your source... I wonder how they came to that conclusion.
Finally, the dark spots on our Milky Way are just dust clouds between us and light sources. There is no real center or "birth canal" of the universe according to the big bang theory. The Mayans were very good at math but people are putting a little too much into the end of their calender... if they were still around today they'd probably just have a new year's celebration like we do, something to commemorate the new calender or the solstice.
There is no need to get knocked up just yet :) you and I will likely be around for many years to come.
EDIT in response to the natural disasters comment:
There are not a lot of natural disasters right now, it just seems that way because you are alive now and are witnessing the recent ones. Right now the biggest threat to man's existance is probably his own pollution and warfare, along with the constant threat of disease, especially AIDS.

I love it when people use the Mayans as their reference for when the world will end. I have to ask, if they were so good at predictions, why couldn't they predict their own conquest by the Spanish?
Edit: One more question. What is the dark spot in the Milky Way? I've never heard of it and can't find any reference to it. You did the research, do you even know what it is?
Second edit: To Socialdeevolution and Mike below: The center of the Milky Way and most galaxies is a very bright region of star formation, not dark and dead. Yes, there are probably suppermassive black holes at the center of galaxies, but these are tiny compared to the total size of the galaxies themselves. You cannot see the black hole at the center, it's outshone by all of the star birth around it. Look at pictures of other galaxies; the brightest part is the center (the bulge), and there is no dark spot.

Actually, Jason. The Mayan's supposedly got this callander from the Olmec, who supposedly got it from some other older civilization who supposedly got it from a pale skinned God with grey hair and a beard who refered to himself as the winged serpent or Quetzacoatl in the native dialect.
The legend goes that he taught them much about agriculture, healing, astronomy, mathmatics etc.
He said he would return one day and pointed out to them the date on the calander when he would. Saying that he would come from the sea out of the East.
By the time that day came, the Aztec were the primary power in the reigon. And on the day he said he would return, Cortez landed and thinking these pale skinned, bearded men bearing the fruits of western civilization appeared on the shores the Aztec mistook them for their ancient benifactor and welcomed them as gods with open arms.
Isn't the world facinating?
But inevetably, the Mayan were probably wrong in some respects. The Sun is very, very, very distant from the center of the galaxy and it would take billions and billions of years for it to travel that far.
We know how that the center of the galaxy is not where stars come from, they are formed by the condensing of Nebuli under their own gravity. If anything, it's quite the oppisite, some therorize there is an enormous black hole at the center of the galaxy. So, if anything, it's more akin to a grave than a womb.
If they got that wrong, how much else could be wrong?
In the end, it doesn't seem likely, we don't know and even if it was true, there's nothing you can do about it anyway.
Do like I've been doing for about ten years now and try not to think about it, too much. ^_^
Also, try reading a book called Fingerprints of the Gods. That's my source for most of what I've said, in regards to Central American civilization and mythos. And it's chocked full of other facinating tidbits.

Birth canal of the wha? I have heard about black holes moving around somewhere. If it's really just some really large garbage disposal maybe we could learn how to use it then.According to the Bible code the Yellowstone super volcano is supposed to erupt in 2010. I seriously doubt that the Mayans were all that knowledgeable by themselves. Most likely whatever extraterrestrial race or whomever taught them might return before then. Maybe the temples were landing platforms also.

If the Mayans went out of existence and they did not have our technology.
Maybe the prognosis for us will spell doom in a much shorter time.

The problem I have with the earth ending in 2012 is that since humans arbitrarily chose the dates for the calender, 2012 is exactly two-thousand-twelve years from no time in particular.

There are no more natural disasters now, in fact, we are in a quiet period of seismic activity. Don't let a bunch of talk scare you, especially not stuff you find on the internet. Everyone has a theory, and none of them are 100%.

The black spot in the middle of the milky way is a super massive black hole. All galaxies have them. Do some research, its quite interesting.
