Check out http://www.ClassTopic.com They have some great topics that I've used in the past. Each topic has three good sources to get you started on the research, too.

For a final paper due in a class last year that had to be 4-6 pages I had to answer the question, Should the public, the average "joe" be told about a United States President’s extramarital affairs either in the past or present? What about the partner/woman’s- or man’s name as well?
That is what i would call a fun and interesting topic and would be different from any other paper your instructor will be grading or that would be my guess anyways.

Doesnt that depend on what you're into? And "fun" can be a matter of how you deal with a topic... I wrote a paper on "the typical murder in america." I went to the FBI sourcebook of crimes, which keeps track, and wrote an amusing paper on it. For instance, "in spite of what you may have heard, you are more likely to die from an accident, than from murder (use reference here.) SO, when you fall to your death, you probably were not pushed..... then later I say statistically, you are more likely to be considered, even here in America, to be possessed than to be murdered. Even your chances of dating a millionaire are higher... about 1 in 20. However, if you tell your wife that, you might find the odds change. .... Speaking of guns, it is the most typical weapon in murders in all regions of America, but occasionally explosives are used.... blah blah blah.
SUch a paper is "fun" to read, imaginative, and a break from boring writing. Maybe you could try that???
Some things I have written about, and found "fun" in a sense...
Anne Frank... the history of Marijuana... the death penalty...
some things that might be interesting....
How something is made
the life of someone you admire
a past society
Eskimos (focus in more specific)
Good Luck... you dont have long.... perhaps my first example, on murders, would be simpler... let us know!!!

I did a research paper on the arguments for and against the existence of aliens. I just wrote about Rosewell and other "alien encounters".
It was pretty fun and you can find out some pretty wacky stuff.
