I have read quite a few answers and I have talked to some individuals in real life about this and I get the impression that what you earn a degree in is not as important as your work ethic, your ability to network, among other things. On the other hand, there are also others who say that it absolutely matters what you get your degree in and people will respect you more if you major in certain subjects. What do you think?

i guess the major you took in college matters in one way or the other because its a training ground for you to achieve competency in a certain field, say an employer cant hire a medical major graduate to do accounting works, etc...and also if you want to pursue higher studies like masters or doctoral degrees, the assessor has to evaluate if you can get the course depending on your background in college, if they feel you need to get extra subjects just to make you fit in with the curriculum

but i can not discount that to others, having a major does not really matter, mostly felt on a "whom" you know that rules rather than "what" you know scenarios

I think it depends on what line of work you plan to get into after graduation. Some majors prepare you specifically for an industry, while others give you knowledge but you'll still need to learn more within a company to be successful.

Some companies won't hire people who don't have a 4 year degree, yet put new recruits into an intense training once hired.

Other companies hire specific degrees. Most will look at where you did your internship, or what skills you bring along with your degree when choosing who to interview for positiions.

Once you're hired and you get inside an organization, most employers will value what you know and what you can do more than what your major was.

I think it depends on what you want to go into. There are several jobs that just require a bachelor's degree in something. They don't really care what, just so long as you did well and have a degree. However, I do think that for some jobs, it does make a difference. For example, if you want to go into computers - you will most likely need to major in an IT type of program. Some jobs require that you have specialized education in a particular program. I also think that many jobs look more favorably on certain majors. If you want to go into business, they may hire someone with a business/finance/marketing degree over someone with a history/english major.

Overall, I would just choose something that you are most interested in. If you are truely passionate about it, you should be able to find a job that suits your interests.

Yep...nearly everyone in my husbands computer dept at work has a degree in something other than computers. Dh's degree was in chemical engineering, the airforce hired him as a civilian based solely on the fact that he HAD a degree in a scientific field, then trained him completely in what he wanted to do.

So I guess if he majored in letters he probably wouldn't have been hired. But if something like letters was his interest, he probably would not have wanted a computer field, yes? LOL!

If you want to teach, major in anything...the new laws nearly require all teachers to be trained to teach in every field.

Good luck

It is not a simple yes/no answer. A major will open doors to a specific field, especially professional fields and can open doors to grad school. A liberal arts degree will always be valuable in moving into ANY field and any grad program (if you have the prereqs.) because it prepares you to think. The most important thing is to study something you enjoy and doing well.
