IIS stands for Internet Information Server. It is a SW based server. A server is a HW or SW used to that provides services to other computers on a network e.g. hosting a website, sharing files in an organization.
All these are done on the SERVER.
The IIS is deveoped by MS and is inclided with MS Server 2000/2003.
You only need it if you are on a network and your computer is a host to other client machines.

It is a MS technology, used for running a Windows server.

You can use it in a local setting for experimenting with setting up a windows server to host a website with such technologies as ASP.

Is it used always? No. Only for web serving. and in the Public sector more people use Linux/Unit with Apache servers because they are faster, and they have stood the test of time.

good luck

IIS stands for Internet Information Services if I recall correctly. It is the web server used by Microsoft. It comes with NT, 2000, 2003, and XP Pro. It isn't installed by default on XP Pro and 2003 may need to have it turned on first, but 2000 server might have it one by default.

IIS = Webserver. Webservers are software used in hosting websites. IIS is from Microsoft.

It's not always used. A more popular (and free) webserver is Apache (http://apache.org/)
