The DNA helix is composed of two strands. Each strand is made up of repeating units called nucleotides, which are made up of a phophate, a sugar (deoxyribose), and an aromatic base. Each of those units AND their linkage type is completely conserved in every DNA helix, and the only thing that changes is the specific identity of the aromatic base (it can be guanine, G, adenine, A, cytosine, C, or thymine, T). The specific sequence of bases (all 3 billion of them) is what makes up your genetic code.

To give you a non-biology analogy, if you asked what components are retained in all CDs, I would tell you that CDs are made up for repeating small magnetic units which are either magentized or unmagentized (1 or 0) and are arranged sequentially in an inward spiraling pattern on a circular disc (instead of a double helix). The components are conserved across all the magnetic bits, but it's the sequence of magentized and non-magnetized bits (1s and 0s) that determines the song that will play.
