Some scientists believe that the molecules are magnetized by the way the electrons rotate or spin inside the atoms.
Electromagnetism is magnetism which is produced by an electric current. The word also means the branch of physics which studies the relationship between electricity and magnetism. There are two basic principles of electromagnetism: (1) Electricity in motion produces a magnetic field; (2) a magnetic field in motion across an electrical field produces an electromotive force.

Magnets are made up of electrons and protons and neutrons like any other elements but in order to show properties of a magnet it has to be related to ferrous family.
You may know that magnets have poles, i.e. north and south pole. If you think about it, why do magets have these strange electron lineup, pointing in one direction? This is because of the earth's gravity and polarity. Earth itself is a huge magnet, so when you see or create a magnet, it will only exhibit the properties of a magnet if their polarities are in order with that of the earth.
If you let a magnet float in the air (tied to a string), you will notice that it will always point towards north and south, provided there are no interference. That is one proof of magnetism of earth. And you know it is very simple to create a temporary magnet of your own. Just take a piece of metal(preferably a raw iron), stroke it about 50 times in one direction with a known magnet, you got yourself a magnet. until the Electron lineup is unidirectional in that iron, it exhibits properties of a magnet.
