Most of the jobs I have gotten were through word of mouth and knowing who to talk to. Experience alone seems not enough. Those who know the head people seem to move up in position a lot faster to me. Do you agree or disagree?

Knowing who to contact is important but after getting the job you better know what you're doing.

It's a little of both. In almost all situations, politics will become an issue. Good professional contacts are always a plus. Sadly, there's almost always a friend or family member of a big wig who will get to move ahead of the pack despite being less qualified or not as good a worker. Try making contacts with some higher ups if you can. Be sure not to seem smoozy or it may backfire. Just show genuine interest in what they know and let them see how intelligent you are. Good luck!

That's the norm where I work. It does not matter what type of education you have or how good at your job you are. One guy became a "supervisor" on second shift because he would brown nose the plant manager. I have more seniority than he does and they didn't even off me the job...heck they didn't even post the job to see if anybody else wanted it. It's really sad when that happens. People who really deserve to move up don't because they are not connected to the right people. Also there seem to be several sets of rules where I work. One set for me, another set for another guy, this person can get away with murder and this person better not show up 30 seconds late or he'll be fired.

I totally agree!

It is a combination of both. But it sometimes depends on your experience too.

Networking is one of the best tools to get the job you want as well as find the people you need to contact too!

Who you know may get you the job, but how much you know may help you keep it.
