I was surprised that when I turned off my modem, and was no longer connected to the internet, that real player continued to play an audio clip I was listening to. I didn't know it could do that? Can it do this for all audio and video clips? Is it only required that my computer be on, similar to when watching dvds?

if you are talking about watching online videos or listening to online audio streams then there is no problem in listening to them offline as long as the buffering has reached 100% (in case it hasn't the playing will stop at the last point been buffered). If you are talking about plain audio/video files then I can't get your question since it's obvious you can keep on listening to those even if you are nol onger online, real player is just a normal media player like windows media player or VLC...

The audio clip was downloaded to the temporary internet files on your computer, the clip continued to play because the clip was not playing from the internet but from your own computer. If you are using Windows, the temporary internet files are stored in the C drive of your computer under your 'documents and settings' file. It is a good practice to delete the files every so often because they take up space on your hard drive and can slow your computer down.
