Hopefully you aren't too modest but at around 20 weeks when you have an orgasm your uterus will contract and you can feel it for at least 2 or 3 minutes.

At about 12 weeks your uterus will start to come up from your pubic bone. Still then it's a little difficult to tell what you're feeling for. Next time you see your doctor, you could ask to have them show you do it yourself. Until I was closer to 20 weeks, it was difficult to really tell for sure myself where it was too. Now, I can tell pretty easily. Way over my belly button.
Also the comment about orgasms, yup that's one way to tell.

if you know what you are feeling for you should be able to feel your uterus even when you aren't pregnant. i have no idea what to feel for. you would have to ask the doctor.
