The Direct TV DVR is definitely cheaper – but you’ll regret buying it. It’s received terrible press and is prone to problems.
Pay extra and get the DirecTivo.

I have the Direct TV DVR R15, and it is true there are several issues with their software. The receiver seems ok, just a bad user experience. On the flip side, before switching to Directv, I was a DISH customer for six years and had the PVR 500. The internal hard-drive was smaller, so less recording capabilities, but the software was rock solid. I only switched because I moved to a different state, thus fell victim to the Sunday Ticket to watch my team on Sunday, but that is another story. I would say it boils down to the deal you get from each company. Directv requires a two year commitment, they just don't say so upfront. You will hear some controversy on that one, especially since the receiver is being leased and not purchased. I own the DISH receiver, although I think they might have changed that policy. In my opinion, get the most upfront, I say that because once you are a customer, you get NOTHING. They only market heavily towards new subscribers, it will cost you to upgrade. As for the TIVO, you can still buy one off ebay or online and call them for activation. There are a few things that you are unable to do that is being offered by the new Directv receiver, but the TIVO is reliable. TIVO also requires a subscription per month, so its a wash. Just be savvy and shop around.

I have DirecTV with the Tivo, not the new DirecTV DVR's. I LOVE MT DirecTV Tivo and just was going to order two more and found out they do not offer the Tivo branded units anymore. I am going to cancel my order since I have heard and read how different the new software works and issues with it. Try to find DirecTV units with Tivo they are better and DirecTV will still use them with your service.
Tivo stand alone units are great for networking but they DO NOT RECORD 2 digital channels at the same time. It will only allow you to record 1 digital and one analog signal at the same time. So if you have DirecTV already Tivo probably would not fulfill what you are looking for.
Next DirecTV with Tivo is HELL OF ALOT BETTER than Dish networks DVR's. People that have tried both ALWAYS complain about Dish's DVR's and how much better DirecTV Tivos are. Hope this helps..

hi JBadge, i will admit i'm biased. I prefer TiVO because of the fact of simplicity of use. Their schedule is often suitable because of the fact this is as much as date daily. i'm able to software TiVO to record from out of city over the internet. TiVO learns what you like and recommends shows which you will possibly be able to like. generally situations we in no way could have customary they have been on. you may software an entire season of a given sequence with a single click and TiVO in no way forgets. you may tell TiVO you like somebody or some thing and it will hit upon shows for you. as an occasion in case you tell it you like John Wayne that is going to watch for and record something he's on. i might desire to pass on and on approximately TiVO. there is one draw back and that's the month-to-month (you pays each year in case you opt for) cost. Dish network and soon Direct TV will loose there long distant networks. I have dish and live in a rural mountain community where there is no cable or antennae reception. They recently cut off Nbc Cbs Abc and Fox with no explanation. So Fucccck Direct tv and all Satelite networks. Stick with cable if you have it.
