Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

** Anti-Virus **
The best 2 are AVG Anti-Virus by Grisoft ( http://www.grisoft.com ) and Avast! Anti-Virus by Awil Software ( http://www.avast.com ).
I think, the only downside of AVG is that you can't schedule automatic scans whenever you want. I got away from it for a short time when it had problems with XP when XP was new. Enticing with extra features to buy the "Pro" version is how they make their money to do their anti-virus research, after all.
Another thing I like about Avast! is it uses less resources, which is great if you need to work at the same time...but the scans are slower. AVG doesn't exactly hog resources, either.
** Anti-Spyware **
I too, would have recommended Spybot Search and Destroy, but this summer they have been bought out by Microsoft. Considering Microsoft's shoddy record, using so-called "Windows Genuine Advantage" to spy on what software people have installed, I would try another top-rated one.
Unfortunately, it seems most of the top ones are not free, but they seem to be cheap:
* Webroot Anti-Spyware ($29.95)
http://www.webroot.com/consumer/products/spysweeper/
* Spyware Doctor ($29.95)

Download the free for life AOL Virus Shield, is powered by Kaspersky Labs. out of Russia an is rated #1 in the world for virus detection. You will get auto. updates every hours on the hour. Background scanner that scan in real time, plus scans on shutdown and bootup. You don't have to have an AOL account to get this free software. I had Avast for nine years until two weeks ago I was hit with six trojans and Avast missed all six. Even with the scan failed to find them. So I removed Avast for Kaspersky. Found all six and removed.

I use Avast! for antivirus and Ad-Aware for spyware removal. I also have the Norton Spy-Ware scan on the Yahoo! toolbar. Between the three of them they work great.

Try the free trial of Panda.
If you decide to get it afterwards, buy it for $10.50 (one year of updates!) at: http://www.pricewatch.com
Panda also check incoming and outgoing email as well as P2P downloads (before they contaminate your computer!).
