You need to be evaluated for cardiac problems. Those could be either angina (ischemia, where the heart isn't getting enough oxygen but the muscle doesn't die) or small heart attacks (part of the heart muscle does die)
Different people experience heart pain differently. Some people have heart attacks and have no pain at all. If it IS a heart problem, there are lots of medications that can reduce your risk of an early death.
Doctors are much more bothered when you drop dead than when you seek advice for a potentially fatal problem. Seriously, we see LOTS of people for "rule out MI" that do "rule out", as we say. The pain may not be cardiac in origin, but we always check the heart thoroughly to make sure.
As a motorist, I'd appreciate if you didn't drive until this was sorted!

I have no idea. But I really don't think you will be bothering the doctor, especially if you rarely go in. Men never seem to want to go to the doctor. But if you are actually to the point of considering going, it is a sign that you really need to go.
Just call them and explain your symptoms. Based on what you tell them, they will tell you when you need to be seen. They will either give you an appointment down the road, or if they believe it necessary, they will squeeze you in right away. But at least give them your symptoms, and let them decide how urgent it is. They are the professionals. And I am sure your loved ones would rather see you safe than sorry. Russ, I wish you well.
PS
Don't hesitate to go to the ER if you sense you need to, or even to call an ambulance if it gets bad.

That's interesting because I have and still do have exactly the same problem. I went to see the doctor once...did nothing for me, and had no idea. He made it sound like I was making it up, because my heart rate seemed to be fine (I mean it's not like it's happening every second so he couldn't detect it)
He then came the conclusion that it was due to anxiety...although I never seemed to be too anxious when it happened.
So, the answer is that I don't know...but it could be due to anxiety. The pain experienced from anxiety is very similar to your problem.
Hope that helps :)

Don't be silly - your doctor is there for you. Go tomorrow, don't mess around playing silly guessing games. It might be a small problem and you could make yourself ill worrying about it.

I suggest that you go see your Doctor ASAP! We're not doctors on here and we can't replace the medical advice your doctor can give you. So please, for your health, go to your Doctor!
