TV news should have absolutely no corporate sponsorship or advertising. And it shouldn't accept pre-packaged videos from the government promoting the views of the ruling political party. News should report significant events in politics, science and society. It should not cover entertainment or sports.
Crime reporting is not a significant event since it doesn't really affect anyone besides the people involved in the crime directly. Unless the police are asking for help in finding a suspect, crime reporting doesn't need to occur.
Entertainment "news" is really free advertising, as is sports news. They both waste a significant amount of time on a half-hour broadcast.
For a no-nonsense news broadcast, I recommend Democracy Now! http://www.democracynow.org

That is the most stupid idea. Just think of all the glamour we'd lose. Natasha thingy and that one off 5. All we'd have left is that rancid sharon osbourne woman.
It also depends where you live. If you live in London, all the news will be miserable and unsavoury as it is a very cold and unsavoury place. However, in certain parts of the country, the local news is quite entertaining.
What would you put on it's place?

I think the media should report some good news for a change. There is plenty of it to go around. It is just not as sensational and as big a boost for their ratings as bad news.I think news stations should dedicate a half hour to all the bad news in the world, then put on a half hour of all the good news after that. But that will never happen because they can not sensationalize the good news like the bad.I know the media is considered liberal and they are in my opinion, but this is not strictly a liberal disease, just look at Fox Network, they are just as bad.

Yes, respect for the families of victims, please, my problem with the beeb is, that it is staffed and managed by oxbridge people, always has been, that is , by about people from the top 10% of the population, who are not aware of how, what they would call the great unwashed live.so we have dumbing down, sink estate soaps, horrific newsreels, how insulting. there aare a great number of people out there who appreciate good drama, do not need violence to make them switch on, and know that they need a good impartial news service. why not publish figures of staff from oxbridge universitys , as opposed to other universities.

That's called burying your head in the sand. If you were the victim, wouldn't you want people to know?
Yes, life can be depressing. Unfortunately we all have lessons to learn. It's why I tell my daughter not to walk around the streets at night - because I know what can happen - while she is too innocent to know.

Its a good point. The trouble is the media only considers bad news as newsworthy no matter who they hurt. Good news is hardly worth a mention.

The TV news isn't really news anymore, it's just entertainment for people who enjoy it. I guess this kind of thing sells.
